Do mushroom spores expire? How long do mushroom spores last? How long to spore syringes last? These are some questions you may wonder after purchasing your freshly made spore syringes from Seed Canary. In this article we will explain how long spore syringes can typically remain viable for and how you can prolong the lifespan of your syringe(s).
How long do spore syringes last when unrefrigerated?
When it comes to the lifespan of spore syringes, it is said that they can typically last up to two years when unrefrigerated, such as stored in a cabinet or kept inside the storage bag we provide if you purchased your syringe from us. However, we recommend to use or discard syringes after the first year, just to be safe. After the first year when NOT stored in a dark and cool environment (such as a refrigerator), Spores can loose viability OR after being used multiple times can have contaminates introduced inside the spore solution which may lead to an increase in contaminations when inoculating.
How long do spore syringes last in the refrigerator?
When purchasing a spore syringe from Seed Canary, You can expect your spore syringe(s) to last a very long time if stored properly. Spores are dormant and can live for years without food or water, as long as they are not exposed to extreme temperatures or direct sun light. When stored in a cool, dark place such as a refrigerator, spore syringes can last for many years and stay clean from contaminations assuming they are being kept/used in a sterile environment.
That said, it is always still recommended to use a spore syringe as soon as possible after purchase. Once a spore syringe is opened, the spores are exposed to the air and begin to deteriorate. For this reason, it is best to use a spore syringe within a year of purchasing. BUT if used in a sterile environment kept inside the storage bag we provide, and immediately placed inside a refrigerator after each use, your spore syringe can and will last for many years.
Can Spore Syringes be frozen?
If your goal is to study viable psilocybin mushroom spores, freezing may be a bad idea. While it is possible that frozen spores may still be viable, its not recommended to freeze them as the risk certainly is not worth the reward.
The strain/variety of spores makes a difference, and so does the kind of freezer being used. Most household freezers have temperature cycles which may cause the solution to crack and damage the spores, whereas deep freezers (the chest-style freezers) often maintain a constant temperature which could be fine for spore syringe
Regardless, we do not recommend freezing your syringes if at all possible.
